What should you look for when buying a gas grill?
Finding the right propane gas grill for you can be quite challenging with the seemingly infinite amount of gas grills available. However, different gas grills have select features that may be more relevant to your grilling needs. Here are a few things to consider when buying a gas grill.
Size
The average size gas grills purchased falls around 32 inches. (Source: BBQ Guys) However, depending on your needs, you may want something bigger or smaller. If you’re having some trouble deciding how big of a grill you should get, think about the following questions:
How big is your backyard or patio?
If you have a spacious backyard, you may want a larger grill so have more room for cooking versatility. However, if you have a smaller patio, you may want to look for a smaller barbecue that fits the proportions of your space without overcrowding the area.
How many people do you plan on grilling for at a time?
A bigger grill may be more useful to cooks who host large gatherings. However, if you have a small family and don’t expect too much company at a time, you can just as easily do well with a smaller grill.
Generally, bigger gas grills have the advantage of having separate cooking zones, allowing you to grill different meats and vegetables at the same time. You’ll also be able to smoke foods easier with larger gas grills because you’ll have the room to cook using indirect heat. However, larger grills are often more expensive, so if you’re looking for a cheap gas grill, stay far away from the big ones!

Grate Material & Thickness
Quality gas grills usually have stainless steel grates or cooking grids. These typically receive wear over a long period. Stainless steel grates last much longer compared to other materials and can retain heat very well. It’s for these same reasons that it’s also good to look for grates that are thicker in size.
Flame Tamers
Also known as “flavorizing plates” or bars, flame tamers can be found between the grates and burners. Their role is to protect the burners from any grease or other drippings from cooking food, decreasing the chances of any flare-up.
Flame tamers also have the alternative name, “flavorizing plates,” due to their secondary role of causing the drippings to vaporize on contact; this results in a smoky flavor that is reflected in the food being grilled.
So what about flame tamers/flavorizing plates do you need to look for in your new gas grill? Keep an eye out for heavy gauge stainless steel or high-quality ceramic tamers. The area of the barbecue in which they live receives a lot of wear, very quickly, so the tamers should be made of these durable, long-lasting materials.
You should also look for the amount of tamers present; the more coverage, the better. With more tamers, you are likely to have a more even-heated cooking surface.
Burners
It’s not a real gas grill unless it has the right burners! Burners are the parts of a gas grill that see the most replacement due to their continuous use, so it is especially important that you start off with high-quality burners to reduce how often you’ll need to replace them.
The best gas grills will have conventional stainless steel burners in addition to an infrared burner; infrared burners are capable of providing extremely high heat–ideal for cooking steaks and other juicier foods. Infrared burners also allow you to preheat quicker and cook faster.
Also look for a higher number of burners available on the grill; the more burners, the more cooking zones you have, or areas in which you can cook multiple types of food at different temperatures at the same time.
Grill Body & Hood
Premium gas grills will be welded entirely, with all seams intact. They also have a double-lined stainless steel hood (lid); double-lined hoods are better at heat retention, and will also prevent the outside of the lid from becoming discolored from internal steam and smoke.
Lighting
This grill feature isn’t required for a grill to be your best option. But, if you live in a generally darker area or just like grilling at night, you will appreciate a gas grill that offers internal and/or external lighting options so you can see what you’re doing without having to squint with the fire’s light. This is especially beneficial for those hosting a backyard grilling or BBQ party well into the night!
Fuel Conversion Kits
Similarly to the lighting, this feature of some gas grills isn’t necessarily required but is good to have if you plan on eventually integrating your grill into an outdoor kitchen setup.
Backup Ignition
Some grills offer a flash tube backup ignition that allows you to ignite your burners at the cooking grate surface with a standard lighter in the rare event your primary ignition does not work.
Compatible Accessories
Think about what you’ll be doing with your grill and the accessories you will need to make those things happen. Make sure those accessories are compatible with the grills you’re considering or see if those potential grills already come with those add-ons. For example, if you plan on smoking food with your gas grill, you may want to have a smoker box included too.
Warranty
Although gas grills can last for a very long time, you should still look for a barbecue that comes with a good warranty; this will prevent you from having to spend more money down the road on replacing parts. The most important part that should be covered are the burners; an ideal warranty will last a very long time–at least a few years. Of course, you can never go wrong with lifetime warranties that cover both parts and labor for replacement.

We’ve talked about gas grills this entire time, but if you’re looking for a new grill, you may also be curious about charcoal grills, too. However, believe it or not, there are actually quite a few benefits gas grills have over charcoal.
We hope you found value in the list! If you’re looking for a cost-efficient gas grill check out our article on the best gas grills under $200.
Benefits of Using a Propane Gas Grill
There are many reasons why people prefer using gas grills over charcoal grills:
- Efficiency – The costs of buying more tanks of liquid propane gas are much lower compared to purchasing additional bags of charcoal.
- Speed – With a gas grill, you don’t have to wait for the fire to ignite as you do with charcoal. The fire sparks immediately when you light it.
- Easy Clean-Up – Charcoal leaves behind a messy ash residue, while gas does not.
- Compatible with Gas-Powered Homes – You can easily hook up your gas grill to the gas line in your home to receive a nearly endless amount of cooking fuel.
- Smoking Compatible – Want to smoke meats or vegetables? You can do it with a gas grill too! Many gas grills come equipped with side burners or smoke boxes, allowing you to create delicious smoked foods matching that of a charcoal grill’s work.
- Gives Food Moisture – Gas grills emit steam while cooking; some claim that this steam helps add moisture to meat, so it doesn’t dry out as quickly as with other cooking means.
No matter your grilling, smoking, or barbecuing needs, there is certainly an outdoor grill for you!
